Tampico Saddle Club & Wiley City Rodeo History

The Tampico Saddle Club is believed to have been formed in 1947. The earliest written records indicate the club received recognition as a non-profit unincorporated association in February 1949 with 39 members, and Alan Shockley serving as President.

During the early years of the club there were two rodeos and a horse show put on each year. The arena used at that time was located across from the Tampico Store on land owed by William and Doris May Mondor (the Mondor's leased the land to the club for five years for the fee of $1.00 and two membership cards). Admission charge for those events was $1.25 for adults and .50 for children.

In December of 1953, a committee consisting of Shockley, Jack Adams, and Hugh Wiley was asked to prospect for a new arena site, possibly near Wiley City or Ahanum. It's not known exactly when the club purchased the property that serves as the venue for today's rodeo from Floyd Willard, but our best guess is sometime around 1963.

Today, the decendants of these Tampico Saddle Club pioneers continues to present the Wiley City Jackpot Rodeo, providing wholesome family entertainment and earning funds to support arena maintenanace and improvements, as well as other clubs activities.
